Foundations engage citizens online and in person through a Budget Games event at the Deliberative Democracy Exchange

Every Voice Engaged Foundation (Scotts Valley, CA) and the Kettering Foundation (Dayton, OH) engaged over 40  participants in a novel form of participatory democracy at the Deliberative Democracy Exchange from July 23-24 in Dayton, OH.

Every Voice Engaged’s Budget Games have been used by organizations and communities to help citizens understand the complexity of fiscal challenges and collaborate on the difficult decisions required to resolve them.  This version was specifically designed to address tradeoffs surrounding the growing national debt and resulting interest costs.

The game was structured for both online and in-person participation, with facilitators provided by Every Voice Engaged and observers from the Kettering Foundation.

Participants responded positively and the resulting feedback is being used by both Kettering and Every Voice Engaged to develop solutions that “make democracy work as it should”.  The Foundations are expanding conversations to apply complementary online solutions that will support deliberative democracy research and exchanges.
